Searchers find missing former police chief

BEAVERDAM – Searchers about midnight found a former Asheville police chief who disappeared after leaving for a morning walk Wednesday.
More than 100 people had joined in on the search as it grew thoughout the day and into the night.
Fred Hensley, 74, was first reported missing about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when he didn’t return to his Beaverdam Road home after walking his dog before noon, Penny Luther said.
Luther said her father suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and had just started taking new medication.
“He went to walk his dog and never came back,” Luther said. “The dog came back without him.”
She said her father was able to answer his cell phone but, because of his condition, could not figure out his exact location or dial 911 to activate the GPS signal in his phone.
Police sent out an automated reverse 911 message to homes in the area asking for information on the missing man.
Searchers found Hensley in an area about one-half mile from his home. He was cold but otherwise appeared fine.
Asheville Police Capt. Tim Splain said city patrol officers assisted. Other law enforcement officers, fire and rescue crews and a helicopter from the State Highway Patrol also helped with the search.
